This girl at the gate I took on my first visit to Burnside and the farm, in 1986.

Keno, Kentucky, schoolhouse, where Harriette Arnow taught when she and Harold farmed nearby in the late 1930s and early 1940s. There is no road to the one-room school, just a steep path. Photo from 2010.

The schoolhouse is held up in the corners by rocks, and that's all. Family friend and local historian Wanda Worley (center) and Arnow biographer Sandra Ballard (right) strike the same pose that Harriette Arnow did for a photo back when she was a teacher here in about 1940. Photos April 2010.

Historical Marker honoring Harriette Arnow in Burnside, Ky. I liked the juxtaposition of these signs by the highway. Does Arnow go better with Coke? I never saw Harriette drink Coke, but she did like bourbon and Lucky Strikes. Photo 2011.

The railroad tracks at the bottom of a deep cut in the mountain that exposes coal seams near Burnside. The Dairy Bar in Whitley City, Ky., near Pulaski County, features good pulled pork sandwiches and sweetheart waitresses who will run out to your vehicle in the parking lot to take your order.
